Girl, Interrupted Pages # 1-60

Summary: After a session with a doctor she had never visited before, Susanna Kaysen was put by the doctor in a cab and was sent to McLean Hospital. The doctor she had never seen before asked her if she needed rest, without knowing exactly what he meant she answered, yes. Next thing Susanna knew she was being sent to a psychiatric hospital. The doctors told her she would only stay there for a couple of weeks to get some rest, but as the days went by Susanna knew that she would be there for awhile. At McLean she met other girls who in her eyes were sociopaths. Among one of these "sociopath" was Polly who had set herself on fire, she had used gasoline and would often have nightmares about it. Lisa, who rarely ate and she never slept was very thin and had huge bags under her eyes. She would runaway every time she had the chance to, however she was always brought back, her freedom only lasted the longest two days. However, after her third time being bought back to the hospital, Lisa wasn’t the same, she would spend all her time in the TV room and the bathroom. Susanna noticed that Lisa would go to a different bathroom every time, there were four and she would make the circuit daily. What Susanna and the other girls didn’t know was that Lisa was plotting. She had wrapped all the furniture, the TV and the sprinkler system on the ceiling in toilet paper. Just like all the girls in McLean, Susanna had try to commit suicide as well. Her motives were weak, an American-history paper she didn’t want to do it so she asked her herself "why not kill myself?" She decided to take fifty aspirin, then she called her boyfriend and told him that she was going to kill herself. However, as she was about to pass out she began crying about her death and began feeling compassion for herself and that’s when she went out to the street to be saved.

Quote: "Perhaps it's still unclear how I ended up in there. It must have been more than a pimple. I didn't mention that I'd never seen that doctor before, that he decided to put me away after only fifteen minutes."

Reaction: This quote demonstrates that Susanna didn’t even know the reasons as why she had been sent to a psychiatric hospital. She was in a world where she didn’t realize that picking on her pimple meant she was depressed and taking fifty aspirins meant she was a danger to herself. Its like she didn’t want to admit that she was a danger to herself and it was better if she was treated. That day when she was sent to McLean, instead of trying to get out of the cab, Susanna just laid her head on the seat, thinking how glad she was to be in a cab instead of waiting for the train. She didn’t realize that the was the trip to the end of her freedom.
